New Credit Card Readers with Cameras Introduced at Walt Disney World Stores

New credit card readers are being rolled out at Walt Disney World Resort. The update to the new readers began on Monday, August 21. It appears designed to make the experience faster, more efficient, and more secure.

The new reader features a tap to pay touchpoint along the top of the reader, which allows for guests to use their MagicBands, phones, or tap-enabled cards to complete transactions.

These new card readers recognize MagicBands much more easily and quickly, so guests don’t have to wait when making purchases.

Guests can still swipe cards through the swipe located just below the tap point, and a chip reader is below the number pad for cards with chips.

It also has an front camera, which you can see just above the swipe, which is used for “1D/2D code scanning,” according to the company that manufactures the readers.

The new machines are housed in the same frame as the old machines.

The screen size on the new credit card readers is 4.5 inches diagonally, while the most recent previous version of the machine measured in at 7 inches. Some Cast Members are concerned that the new screen is too small for older guests to see and read well.

Here are photos comparing the size of the screens on the new readers versus the old readers. We used a park map as our ruler, which measures out to be around 4 inches long when folded. As you can see, the comparison between the two shows a significant reduction in screen size.

Here’s a look at what one of the former card readers looked like. While a number are still available, the new ones are starting to replace them.

The chip reader was still at the bottom, below the number pad, but the card swipe was located on the side.

The MagicBand reader was a separate attachment from the credit card reader, included via plug-in to the main reader.

This is the other type of card reader previously used at Walt Disney World. Some can still be found throughout the resort.

It had a swipe along the right and a chip reader along the bottom like the previous reader, but also included a tap to pay touchpoint for MagicBands and tap-enabled cards and phones along the left. It would light up when guests tapped their preferred method of payment.
