A female motorist faces criminal charges but escaped serious injury when her car crashed into the side of the Macomb County Jail in Mount Clemens last week.

The incident happened about 6 a.m. Friday when the woman was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze when she lost control of the car and collided with the jail she was headed north on Elizabeth Road, just west of Groesbeck Highway.

Authorities said the 43-year-old Mount Clemens woman suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

“She was very lucky all the way around,” said department spokesperson Jennifer Putney.

According to deputies, the vehicle went up a curb, hit a tension wire and struck a tree. The vehicle continued through the Macomb County Jail’s barbed wire chain-link fence and hit the building where it finally came to rest.

The driver told investigating deputies that her brakes failed on her vehicle.

She was transported to McLaren Macomb hospital by Medstar Ambulance.

Investigators said she showed no signs of intoxication or being under the influence of narcotics. She was later released by McLaren Macomb after being treated for minor injuries.

Authorities said she is being charged with no insurance and reckless driving.
